Teaching English Tips: Anchors – Use this Great Classroom Management Technique – Guest Vlog by Chris Westergaard

GUEST BLOG BY : Chris Westergaard

A great English teaching tip is to use an anchor during feedback sessions. You can use them for any kind of teaching environment and they are a fantastic little trick to help you manage group classes. What are anchors and why are they useful? Anchors are soft objects (balls, hats, stuffed animals) that students throw around in the classroom to interact with each other. This is a great classroom management technique because it takes the teacher out of the equation and allows the students to interact with each other more freely. They are most effective during feedback sessions after study or speaking activities. As a teacher, you don’t want to be the one who is constantly prompting students to speak and give feedback. Instead, take a step back, use an anchor and allow your students to do it on their own.

Your English doesn’t need to be perfect, just better than your child’s and you’re good to go! Enjoy and let me know how it went! x

How to Teach English: Creating Dynamic Study Activities to Practice Grammar and Vocabulary – Guest Vlog by Chris Westergaard

How to Teach English: Creating Dynamic Study Activities to Practice Grammar and Vocabulary – Guest Vlog by Chris Westergaard

GUEST BLOG BY : Chris Westergaard

Creating great study activities is an important part of making a solid lesson for your language students. At The Language House TEFL, we use the ESA format for most of the practice lessons our trainees teach. In this video, we go over the qualities of a good Study #1. Study 1’s are closed activities where there is only one right answer. The purpose of a Study 1 is to practice the new language (grammar or vocabulary) in a basic way. From there, you move onto a Study 2 (there’s a separate video on this), and then end with an Activation (there’s a video on this too). Without good Study 1’s though, you can’t really get far with the rest of your lesson. Most Study 1’s are a form of a worksheet, but there are so many ways to adapt your Study 1’s to make them more dynamic. Remember, that it’s all about increasing STT (Student Talking Time) and getting off the page. Regular worksheets are boring. Don’t just pass out a piece of paper for your students to create. Instead, get creative and think of ways to make these activities both academically rewarding and fun.

First Future Group Lesson (20+ students) – Guest Vlog by Teacher Boggie

GUEST BLOG BY : Teacher Boggie

A lot of you have asked me about how First Future lessons work, especially with big groups, so I have decided to upload one of my recent lessons here. I apologize for the bad quality, the recording has been rehashed and thus it’s not exactly 1080p. It’s still very useful for reference, if you want to get a sense of how to conduct online English classes, especially with large groups.
